A few years ago, I posted about my bathtub and tile transformation with Rust-Oleum. In my original post, I showed you how I updated my old (pink!) bathtub for less than $30 and I had a ton of people asking questions about the project and how Rust-Oleum works. Even now, I’m still getting questions! So I thought the best way to answer all the questions you have is by writing an FAQ post.

If you have any questions at all about my bathroom update or about Rust-Oleum in general, I hope they’ve been answered below. If you still have any other questions, feel free to comment on this post and I’ll get you an answer!

A few years ago I refinished my bathtub with Rust-Oleum Tub and Tile Transformation and received a ton of questions. Now I've answered them all for you on this handy FAQ post! | Ask Anna

Rust-Oleum Tub & Tile Refinishing Kit FAQ

How has the product held up over time, and has the paint peeled anywhere?

After a few years, I only have a couple little places that started chipping – and to be honest, I think it’s whatever my new housekeeper was using to clean the tub at the time, because I had never had any problems before. So I’m back to being the one who cleans the tub. Even after having a couple little areas peel (and I mean little – less than the size of a pencil eraser) I would still do it all over again. It looks SO good and it’s 100 times better than the old pink tub!

Interested to see how well the paint held up after a year? You can see that video here.

Do you know if this product covers rust or if we’d need to buy some other product to repair the rust first, and if the product you used will work on top of it?

I would email Rust-Oleum and ask them about the rust issue. My guess would be that you’d need to treat the rust first, maybe sand it off, but once you got rid of it you could definitely cover it with this product.

Does this only work on tile or can it be used on fiberglass?

It would work on any tile, ceramic or fiberglass tub/tile. If you use this on fiberglass, just make sure you give it a good sanding/scuff up, as per the directions.

Did you have to do any sanding, and what did you use to clean the tile and tub before painting?

I used sandpaper to scuff up the bathtub surface. You are really just looking for a clean, rough surface that the paint can adhere to. I used the powder version of Bar Keepers Friend to clean it. The directions on the box are very specific so you’ll know exactly what to do.

Did you just paint over the grout between the tiles on the wall?

Yes, I even painted over the grout lines so that I wouldn’t have to worry about cleaning the grout anymore.

What did you do with the drain? Did you just paint over it?

Yes, I painted the drain because it was easier and cheaper than replacing it!

Did you use only one box to cover the tub and walls twice or did you need two boxes?

I finished 90% of it with one box. I probably could have stretched it but I had 2, so after I finished, I did an extra coat with the second one.

Did you use a foam roller?

Yes, I used a small foam roller (like this one) to paint the tile and tub. The directions on the box tell you exactly what you will need for the project.

Do you have to remove the old caulk?

Yes! It’s important to remove any/all old caulking because otherwise, the product won’t adhere properly. I re-caulked once the paint had dried and it made the tub look brand new! You can see my tip for caulking like a pro HERE.

Will it work on tile floors?

It has a gloss finish so I wouldn’t put it on the floor – it would be too slippery.

How well does the Rust-Oleum hold up in a bathroom that is used everyday?

This is our upstairs bathroom which is used as my daughter’s bathroom, as well as our guest bathroom. It is used for baths at least every other night, and it has held up really well. Again, you can see how it held up after a whole year of use in this post!

Any tips on how to clean the tub from soap and grease without killing the shine after you’ve used the Rust-Oleum kit?

I use an all-natural cleaner and a soft-coarse sponge. I clean ours every other week and after all these years, it’s still shiny.

Overall I have been so happy with this product and the transformation it made in our bathroom, and I definitely recommend the Rust-Oleum Refinishing kit if you’re looking to transform your dated bathroom!

Have you been following along with our downstairs flooring remodel? A few weeks ago I posted about the installation process and how easy it was to install the new Enviqué flooring by Quick•Step. I’m a little late on posting my “reveal” because we had some friends come and stay with us for a week and they loved the new floors. It was also a good test to see how durable the floors were against 3 kids 5, and under. 🙂

Before I show you the “after” picture, let’s take one last look at what it used to look like.

Not only was the old carpet gross and nasty, but that mauve wall just about killed me! I still need to decorate the new space (I’m saving up for a large sectional couch) but by just changing out the flooring and painting the wall, I’d say it’s 100 times better already! I am SO in love with these floors, they are gorgeous!

I am so glad we chose the Gable Oak, over the other two colors we were looking at because the color is light and fresh, and the texture is beautiful, which gives the room character.

The room feels SO much bigger than it used to because of the light flooring, and now that the offensive mauve wall is gone, the room feels like it goes on forever!

There’s still a lot of work to be done down here – painting, more painting and then decorating, but we are pretty stoked about how much better it looks and now that it’s so pretty we enjoy coming down here (before I avoided it like the plague)! Even Scarlett likes playing down here now. 🙂

Aside from decorating, here’s a look at what’s left to do, I’m hoping to have this room completely ready by Fall, when summer is over and we start hanging out in the house again.

We’ve had a lot going on upstairs, with our bedroom/bathroom remodel but at the same time we’ve been working on installing the new Envique floors downstairs. We didn’t really plan on it all happening at once but we have house guests coming and we wanted to get the downstairs finished so they would have a place to stay. I’m so excited to show you the installation progress because the Envique Gable Oak flooring we picked out is sooo pretty, and it’s a HUGE improvement from what we had.

It’s also incredibly easy to install! Our weekends have been busy with upstairs projects so my husband has been installing the Envique floors in the evenings, when he gets home from work.

It’s a big room but the progress is moving along quickly because the patented Uniclic locking system makes installation quick and easy. It also gives added protection to help prevent water damage and warping, which is one of the main reasons I chose these floors over traditional laminate flooring. Even the man who installed the carpet in our bedroom renovation commented when he saw the Gable Oak boxes in the garage, and said that this was the easiest flooring to install!

You can see from the GIF image that installation is as easy as lining up the locking system, fitting the locking system into place, then tapping the planks into place with the tapping block. The process is going quickly, but it’s a really large space so we aren’t quite done yet.

But it’s so pretty and even though we aren’t finished the room looks so much bigger and brighter! I love that the floors look like real wood too, I honestly think that once we finish installation, no one will be able to tell that it’s not real wood.

We have about 1/4 of the room left to finish and then we have to install the baseboards! It will probably be a couple weeks until we’re done but I can’t wait to show you the finished product!!!

Both of my daughters are very creative and right now my youngest is into all things crafty. I am not a crafty person, by nature, so her constant desire to craft is pushing me to new limits. 🙂 Because she loves to make things for people all the time I thought it would be fun to let her make her own decorated candles, for all her grandmas, for Christmas. I found this tutorial online and it seemed easy enough to let her do.

Here’s what you’ll need:

Step #1

Start by cutting a piece of tissue paper to the size of the candle. Then carefully tape the tissue paper to the printer paper so it won’t move around while your little one, or you, are coloring.

Step #2

Pull out the markers and let the creative juices flow. This was definitley Malea’s favorite part and I loved watching her really concentrate on what she wanted to design for each of her grandmas. 🙂

Step #3

Carefully peel the tissue paper off of the printer paper. Cut around the design, getting as close to the edge as possible. Once you’ve cut out the design lay it over the candle.

Step #4

Next tear off a large piece of wax paper, larger than the size of the candle. Lay the wax paper over the design and wrap it all the way around the candle.

Use the HomeRight heat gun to melt the design onto the candle. Turn the heat gun up to 500 degrees, then slowly move it back and forth. It takes a few seconds in each spot, you’ll know it has transferred when the tissue paper turns the same color as the candle and is no longer white. Slowly roll the candle, heating up each side, until the entire image has been transferred.

Once the image has transferred, carefully peel the wax paper away from the candle and “voila!”, you’ve got a beautiful, one of a kind candle designed by your little artist.

Malea was so proud of her creations, the only challenge now is going to be getting her to keep it a secret until Christmas time! Have fun creating! I’d love to see the designs you come up with, you can share with me on Facebook or Instagram. 🙂

When I was making changes to our living room, one of the things you all suggested, was that I needed to get a larger coffee table, and most of you mentioned a square coffee table would look nice. As much as I was sad to move the one we made out of the living room, I definitely agreed that it was the wrong size/shape. I started looking around online for square coffee tables, because I knew this time I didn’t have time to build one, but they were all SO expensive.

And then I went on Craigslist and found the perfect size coffee table for only $20 (what!?)! It had some dog bite marks on the sides, nothing a little sanding couldn’t fix but the biggest problem was that it looked like it was straight out of the 80’s! It had the perfect peach-color gloss, with a little white washing accent, I’m not sure who ever thought that was a good look but it was definitely everywhere in the 80’s, including this coffee table.

The coffee table itself is nice, if you can get past the color. It’s solid wood (and super heavy), great construction, Lane brand, and a table I know will last for a long time. For $20 I couldn’t pass it up, so I brought it home and sanded the 80’s right off of it!

Now it rests perfectly in our living room, the perfect centerpiece to our large room. It’s simple, it’s beautiful and it makes me happy to know that we took an unwanted piece of furniture and turned into a show piece. Don’t you just love an ugly duckling story? 🙂

The stain color I used is called Special Walnut, by Minwax, which is the same stain I used to makeover our breakfast nook table. It looks different on the coffee table, because they are different types of wood, but I love how both of them turned out.
